Bataknese? Is it a must?

leave a comment »

I just had a short visit from my Bapa Uda. Bapa uda is a term for an uncle in Bataknese custom but not related in blood as a blood-related uncle as surname-related uncle. He intended to visit my dad, who was unfortunately went to the church. He was going to HKBP, and stopped by because he missed my dad. [ahh…so sweet]

For politeness sake, I accompanied him for 15 minutes, talking in the living room about me. yeah, you read it correctly, about me. He opened the conversation about my father then my work then my kawan. Kawan is a term used to refer to a boyfriend, also in Bataknese custom.

He asked me directly whether I already has kawan. He told me specifically that I should pray to God so He can give me clues and I can, eventually, showed path to be with the one God wants me to be. I smiled as an answer, thinking that he must have been kiddin’ me??

He told me that I should try to find a man of our culture, as in Bataknese man, so I can preserve the custom and tradition of Bataknese in my future family. He shared his experience with his own daughter. He said that when his daughter was about to marry a Javanese man, he said that he had lost all hope to his daughter and asked her to rethink everything. And, surprisingly, she did. So, she broke up and found another man, this time Bataknese man. I just showed him straight face as an answer. Then I told him that I won’t survive with the culture. And he, then, started to tell all about..family closeness…bounding…etc. I rolled my eyes, can’t believe that I was hearing this from this man, who I don’t even know his name.

Anyway… just a bit surprise in this hot Sunday morning. I thought you wanna know.

just another complaining me :'( [Full Version]

I never met a very mean guy like him nor ever i heard such a cruel word coming out of a man’s mouth. I really do not want to curse or say something bad about him. but, i think everybody’s friend, Karma will finally meet him.

[thanks for visiting this writing even though it’s not done. I hope you did feel anything than like. Please go on reading the full story]

Couple of days ago, when I was on my a very management meeting, a knocked on the door surprised us all. It was my marketing friend knocking. She got me down to the Costumer Relation desk where there are parents there. I have no idea whatsoever of their visitation. Sitting hesitantly, I greeted them with my nicest yet awkward smile. “Yes, Good morning to you two.” I opened the conversation that was apparently already running in light speed.

They were happily explaining all over again to me, which made me start thinking whether they suffered from HMD as in hyperactive mouth disease. The bottom line is, they were complaining about the coming field trip, which is today to KidZania. I summed up our chit-chat as follow:

1. They believe that Kindergarten 1 students (TK Nol kecil) should have their parents or nanny accompany them in field trip activities.
::I said, that not all parents believe in what you believe. Some of the parents like it when their kids learn to be independent. They trust the teachers and school, that if anything happen, the school will take full responsibility. Letting the kids to have field trip with their parents or nanny around won’t be a school field trip, it will exactly what they have every weekend, a family field trip.

2. They believe with all their hearts and soul, that those parents who allow their kids to have field trip without nanny or parents are supposed to be called as ignorant parents.
::I, speechless, said in my heart. If you really care for you boy, you should have open your kid’s communication book so you can know that you need to book for ticket and seat if you want your nanny come along with your kid. You won’t come to school exactly two days before the field trip day, yelling and shouting and being angry with the school costumer relation officer just to make sure that you can have special arrangement that you nanny can come with your kid. So who is the ignorant parent in here?

3. They said that I, being single-unmarried-childless woman could not feel the need to care for the kids, since they are not my children. Moreover, they said that I, of course, will say in my heart that, just let them be, because they are not mine that I can’t have motherly instinct because I am not a mother…wait a minute. I remember now, it’s not them who were saying it. It was the father. Him.
::I only sighed.

I never met a very mean guy like him nor ever i heard such a cruel word coming out of a man’s mouth. I really do not want to curse or say something bad about him. but, i think everybody’s friend, Karma will finally meet him. I cannot believe what I heard at that time. And, I think, since I was so calm and controlled, he repeated his saying twice. So i wasn’t imagining things or misheard. It was a shock, knowing that God trust him children while other married couple that I know far more better than him still childless.

I hope he can have his time to learn to be a good man, husband and father. Otherwise, I pity his children.

I bless thee, Lord, because I GROW
Among thy trees, which in a ROW
To thee both fruit and order OW

What open force, or hidden CHARM
Can blast my fruit, or bring me HARM,
While the enclosure is thine ARM?

Enclose me still for fear I START,
But to me rather sharp and TART,
Then let me want thy hand and ART.

When thou dost greater judgments SPARE,
And with thy knife but prune and PARE,
Ev’n fruitful tress more fruitful ARE.

Such sharpness shows the sweetest FRIEND,
Such cuttings rather heal than REND,
And such beginnings touch their END.

A Broken A L T AR, Lord thy servant rears,
Made of heart, and cemented with tears:
Whose parts are as thy hand did frame;
No workman’s tool hath touched the same.

A heart alone
Is such a stone
As nothing but
Thy power doth cut
Wherefore each part
Of my hard heart
Meets in this frame
To praise thy name

That if I chance to hold my peace
These stones to praise thee may not cease.
Oh let thy blessed sacrifice be mine,
And sanctify this A L T A R to be thine.

Bokeh

Flowers and branches

Do you know what Bokeh is?

In Photography, Bokeh is well known for a blur photograph. In beautiful words, they said “the aesthetic quality of the blur, in out-of-focus areas of image. Check this out for more detailed explanation! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh It’s not really easy to get a Bokeh photograph. You have to focus on an object and really focus on it (press the tulip sign, for micro shoot) and you get a really-really-really focused shot where the object is clear and the background became blurred.

I tried doing this with a standard camera. A borrowed pocket camera of my brother, that is Canon Power Shot A460 with 5.0 megapixels. It’s not really working. As in, it works a bit, but not really as what I expect it to give. They said that i should get a long lens camera, the DSLR or SLR or the expensive one. Yeah… Price is matter here. Here are some of my shoots. Nice for a standard camera, eh?

Asparagus leaves

Anyway, with a help from friend, from his sayings, I should better have more practice before investing in such an expensive thing. 😉

Anyway again, what’s interesting is that the idea on focusing to one object is really against my nature. we should, in my opinion, take a few steps back and look everything in a larger context, community, and see it as a whole. Where nothing will be significant without significant background.

Lonely Orchid

So what’s the use of being beautiful without any contextual meaning. A focus to an object teaches us to focus to a very small part of a multitude that God has given us (it).

On different context, if we are lucky enough, practicing these Bokeh thingy, teaches us to be alert on the strength of others (objects). We became very specific and detailed. And it’s great! You know, today, when i rode around the Depok flyover, where the sky is filled with black clouds. I felt I was flying to those clouds. And while riding, I glanced to my right, and there a line of street lamps. Standing in rows without fearing the dark black clouds. Those was perfect view. The combination of white streets lamp rising high reaching to contrast the dark black sky. The contrast of Black and White (white pressing BW button) in an essence of arrogant and power (my wild imagination). Unfortunately, I was like riding like crazy to avoid the coming rain that I didn’t take any shoot. uh…maybe next time.

Anyway (the last one), this is all just my thoughts. Enjoy yours 🙂

Have a faith as a mustard seed, Len!

Matthew 15:21-28 (New Living Translation)

The Faith of a Gentile Woman

mustard seeds

21 Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Gentile[a] woman who lived there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”

23 But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.”

24 Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep—the people of Israel.”

25 But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!”

26 Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”

27 She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”

28 “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.

Blaise Pascal Chapter

“Jarak tak terhingga antara tubuh dan akal budi melambangkan ketidakterhinggaan jauh lebih tak terhingga jarak antara akal budi dan kasih, karena kasih adikodrati…(itu sebabnya) hati memiliki alasan-alasannya sendiri yang tidak dipahami oleh akal budi.” – PENSEES

O Tuhan, doa Pascal sedemikian agung penuh perendahan diri, membuat kami merasa tak berdaya.

Amin.

We can manage.

crushed

I was reading this article. A month divider article from my daily devotional book, Our Daily Journey. When the writer-Chuck Fridsma-quoted 2 Corinthians 4:7-10, I had, like, oh ya..these verses again, yeah..sure..well, that kinda thought. But suddenly, I remember my old friend, Race Rainville also quoted one of these verses for his email signature line. Very Christian,eh? Well, tell me about it ;p noticing that fact, I, by instinct, reread the quoted verses and on my astonishment, I realized something important, which I am pretty sure, I should have known this.

Let me show you. It is written ” We are pressed on every side by troubles but we are not crushed.” Until couple minutes ago, I always focus on “We are not crushed”. I kept on telling my self that I am not gonna be crushed. I’ll be okay. But hey, read again, we are not crushed when we are pressed on every side by troubles. So, we are pressed on every side by troubles! It was saying that pressed on every side by troubles is not happening and centering on you, solely you. Everybody has this experience. The perfect Indonesian famous quote on thi is “Jangan lebay, Len!” LOL.

So, if we continue to look at the verses this way, we will have:
1. We are pressed on every side by troubles.
2. We are perplexed.
3. We are hunted down.
4. We get knocked down.

Realizing this condition is not bringing a brighter smile on my face. Geez, hunted down and knocked down. What can be worst than that? We are really got knocked down. Down. This thought suddenly makes my everyday misery gone. Seriously, if you are not down yet, be ready, coz u are gonna knocked down! But if you’re down now…there’s the second part of the verses that’s a bit relieving. It is written:
1. We are not crushed.
2. We are not driven to despair.
3. We are never abandoned by God.
4. We are not destroyed.

A 3 letter word: WOW!
Notice number 3, we are NEVER ABANDONED by GOD. I think, that should do it. That should be the line. What ever happened or will happen or is happening…no matter how painful, crushing, tearing down they are…however huge, gigantic and uncomprehendable they are…we are with God, we can manage. We are never abandoned by God.

Chin up!

in front of the MRT station

This is some kinda unique.
People are talking with their own language.
German, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian…
I feel some kinda great.
I don’t have any idea what they are talking about,
and it’s NICE!
If I understand their language,
I bet I’ll pick up their conversation and start thinking about them…

Pluralism. Somehow sometimes so beautiful.
