"Writing is a way of talking without being interrupted."

Christians should stop being jerks.

I was provoked by so many social media posts lately. I had been kind through them all. But this time. No.. oh no… you could not post that kind of thing and not think of consequences it brought. And I came to a conclusion, yes, sometimes christians are just bunch of jerks!

Why the conclusion?

Let me walk you to where I’ve been.

I saw posts from people that I knew from my para-church ministry back when I was still doing my undergrad study or maybe some years afterward as well. They were all good christians, good people. Some differences of course but we were standing on the same ground of belief. As time continues, we were on our separate ways. I stayed single. They got married. I continued my study. They got kids. Life and what it would take us. No complain. People just go on our separate ways. Communication stopped. Just some news here and there on social media. But more and more I became annoyed with these posts. Now, before you pointed your finger on me and called me “envious”, let me take your hand and see what I saw.

I saw them posting photos of their small groups, newly-wed small group. To put you in perspectives, church is a building where believers of Jesus come together to worship Him on Sundays. During the week, these people gather in smaller groups to study the Bible and have fellowship together, hence small groups. Now, this is a christian belief adopted from Acts chapter 2:

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

But people are now more and more creative or so they thought they are. They made men small groups as well as women. Well, these I dont mind. Why? God created them differently hence different needs. But there are newly-wed small group, family small group, single people small group, professional small group, and what? student small group? stupid people small group? Ha! Now, I am crossing the line. I understand clearly that the needs are varied. So people want to fulfil all these needs by dichotomize people into different different groups. But isn’t that a jerk thing? So what if you have a christian friend who doesnt fit to all those group? How would that made that person feels? I am not single, single. I dont fit the single group. I am not married too, I dont fit to married people group. Oh yeah, I am married but not newly married, that group is not for me. I am not a student. I dont work as professionals. I dont have a job. I am not this… I am not that. Ohh… STOP IT! How far would you take the Bible away from its truth?

So what if you are newly-wed? Are you that exclusive that you dont want to join the oldy-wed? Or do you not have a courage to join the existing group and minggle on? What if you have a friend who is never going to get married? Will she or he have no chance at all to join you and hear or experience what you are experiencing right now? Would you rather ask some newly-wed strangers to join you rather than your best bud who stays single? Who are you? Please dont call yourselves christians. The idea of having small groups are three; devotions to the teaching, practice of faith and prayers. And all are welcome. All should be welcomed. Dont deviate from what Jesus taught us. Please, just dont.

Picture this, a non-christian saw how you enjoy your christian lifestyle. When that person asked, “I heard you have meeting every wednesday evening, may I join your fellowship?” then what would you say? Oh sorry, this is only for newly-wed. Wait I know other place that suits you. Are you single, married, divorce, newly-wed, new-parent? What do you do, I know a professional group right for you. umm… this is only for close friends, so I dont think you can join. I ask you, what would you say?

Christians please stop being jerks. Dont you realized that when you do that, you take other people away from coming closer to God?
