ONION RINGS

Onion rings are a type of fast food commonly found in the United StatesCanadaUnited KingdomAustralia, and some parts of Asia. They generally consist of a small or big ring of onion (whose ring-like structure lends itself well to this mode of preparation) dipped in batter or breading and then deep fried. Consumers of whole onion rings run the risk of pulling the onion out of the batter if they fail to cut it all the way through with their teeth, while onion rings made of onion paste break apart easily but oil absorbency diminishes the onion taste.

At first, I am very hesitate to try a food made of onion, especially a plainly deep-fried onion. My first taste was when I dared myself to try a bite from my friend order. To my surprise, I kinda like it. It has this strange texture of an onion. I never eat onion aside from the dish served at Hoka-Hoka Bento. So, I never thought that I will like it. Some fast food restaurant, to my surprise, actually served this menu. But my favorite one is the one from Popeye fast food. The texture of the onion and the flour is extremely delicious for a deep-fried food. Their portion per serving is more than enough. And the most important thing is the price! 5.500 IDR per serving only! Go and grab it now!! 🙂

SPAGHETTI AGLIO OLIO

Spaghetti Aglio, Olio e Peperoncino (Spaghetti with Garlic, Olive Oil & Chili Peppers) is a traditional Italian pasta dish that can be made cheaply without seasonal or store-bought ingredients, said to originate traditionally from the region of Abruzzo, although it is popular across the country. Usually served with spaghetti, the sauce is made by lightly sauteeing minced or pressed garlic in olive oil, sometimes with the addition of dried red chilli flakes. Finely chopped parsley can be added as a garnish, along with parmesan cheese.

I am sure you all familiar with pasta. The Aglio Olio is the type where they saute the sauce. For me it’s so Asian taste. I usually will not choose this type of serving. It is simply because I want to try a real Italian taste when it comes to pasta. But at Comic Cafe, Epicentrum, I made an exception and it was the correct exception one should make. They have this smoked beed spaghetti Aglio Olio, and it taste perfect. The entire spaghetti without flaw, are tasteful. They mix or stir (or whateva) perfectly. The price is reasonable and the size of serving is enough for a big tummy. Pour some extra parmesan cheese and sauce, grab some comics and you will have the world revolves around you.

PANNEKOEK

A pannekoek (plural pannekoeken) or pannenkoek is a Dutch pancake, also known as Dutch Apple Pancake in America. Pannekoeken are usually larger and thinner than American or Scottish pancakes. They may incorporate slices of baconapplescheese, or raisins. Plain ones are often eaten with treacle (syrup made of sugar beets) or powdered sugar.

If you like American or Scottish pancakes, you might as well try this Dutch version of pancakes. It’s very thin if not just a layer of flour. But that thin layer is all about. A little bit crisp as if you are not eating any pancake. The topping will taste more than the flour. No need to feel unsatisfying though, because it is usually made into a very big round shape, so I am pretty sure that you will feel more than enough. I haven’t try a lot of pannekoeken in Jakarta, but Carlo The Hut in Senayan City is a perfect place to try one. It is also a cozy, unique and fine dining place to hang out with friends. Their varies drinks will even make the meal perfect. Try the lychee ice tea for instant, the fruit make you feel fresh and happy. Make sure you have some room in your tummy…

SUSHI

Sushi is a food of Japanese origin consisting of cooked vinegared rice (shari) combined with other ingredients (neta). Raw meat sliced and served by itself is sashimi.  Nigirizushi, hand-formed sushi, consists of an oblong mound of sushi rice that the chef presses into a small rectangular box between the palms of the hands, usually with a bit of wasabi, and a topping (the neta) draped over it. Certain toppings are typically bound to the rice with a thin strip of nori, most commonlyoctopus (tako), freshwater eel (unagi), sea eel (anago), squid (ika), and sweet egg (tamago). The increasing popularity of sushi around the world has resulted in variations typically found in North America and Europe, but rarely in Japan. Such creations to suit the Western palate were initially fueled by the invention of the California roll.

A wide variety of popular rolls has evolved since.

If you are a risk taker and willing to try Sushi, the best place to go is Sushi Tei. It’s great to go there in groups. You can order different types of sushi and share with each other. But if you are alone, afraid not! they have a fine sushi bar where you can enjoy your most favorite sushi. My favorite sushi is everything that has tobiko on it. Somehow, i just love the sensation of such a tiny thing 😉 Californian Roll is a must-try choice.

If you happen to be in an area without Sushi Tei then Sushi Groove is a good option. I love their Mayonnaise Dream Roll and Krakatau Roll. The first one is really really yummy. The mixture of baked mayo and tobiko topping will satisfy your tongue. So tasty! And as you can see, they are all the roll type, the safe choice for beginners. And as for you loaded people, you might also try Kiyadon Sushi, I heard they served premium quality sushi with premium prices as well. I haven’t try it. But you surely have to! err… that’s what other people said. So conquer your tummy by trying some sushi. I hope you like it.

TOM YUM

Tom yum is characterized by its distinct hot and sour flavors, with fragrant herbs generously used. The basic broth is made of stock and fresh ingredients such as lemon grasskaffir lime leaves, galangallime juice, fish sauce and crushed chili peppers. Tom yum is usually made with prawns (tom yum goong or tom yum kung), chicken (tom yum kai), fish (tom yum pa in Laotian and tom yum pla in Thai), or mixed seafood and mushrooms. Read more here.

My first recommendation of this food is at The Cafe of Hotel Mulia Senayan lobby. You can practically choose what’s inside the soup. I love it so much. The taste of the broth is amazing. Don’t forget to put some mushroom and seafood, it will be heaven. They serve it in a slightly small bowl. So, one serving is not enough for me. But, no problem, since The Cafe is a buffet restaurant, you can just order one more. hehe…

My other places to enjoy this food are  Secret Recipe and The Noodle. At Secret Recipe, they serve you with large bowl, but expect to get a lot of “grasses” inside it. As for The Noodle, it will take you forever or slightly more than half an hour to have the bowl served. And I am not that patient.

  1. Uhm well. I’m a big fan of Tom Yum.

I’ve tried it at Secret Recipe and Thai Express. Thai Express is better than Secret Recipe to my liking. I agree that Secret Recipe will serve you with a giant bowl full of grasses. lol

    Next destination: The Cafe!!
Btw, does The Cafe serve Tom Yum all day long or just at specific time?

    Thanks before
